Palermo

One of the best places to visit in Sicily is its main capital, Palermo. It is a fusion of history and culture. Visit the Norman Palace, the Palermo Cathedral, and vibrant markets like Ballar and Vucciria.

The second-largest historical centre in Europe is located in Palermo. It is known as the city that has been conquered the most in history. In fact, Palermo is one of the cities with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With that in mind, visiting this historical gem is a must when it comes to things to do in Sicily!

Taormina

“The Pearl of Sicily”, also known as Taormina, is one of the top places to visit in Sicily. Famous for its breathtaking views and the old Roman theatre, visit the lovely gardens at Villa Comunale, wander along Corso Umberto, and take in the expansive views from the Greek Theatre.

This city is well-known worldwide for its stunning view of the Catania Plain, Mount Etna, and Isola Bella. Since it’s one of Sicily’s most popular tourist destinations, visiting out of season is better to get the most out of your trip. Taormina, renowned for its picturesque small island off the coast known as “Isola Bella,” is not only a destination of natural beauty but also boasts a vibrant and lively nightlife, particularly during the summer months.

Catania

At the base of Mount Etna stands Catania, Sicily’s second-largest city after Palermo. This is the best place to start if you want to get to the volcano. Catania, often known as the black city due to its lava stone construction, has a lot to offer. Spend anywhere between a half-day and a full day exploring the city while you’re looking for things to do in Sicily.

Discover the lively city of Catania and its historic buildings, such as the Fontana dell’Elefante and the Baroque Piazza del Duomo. Visit Mount Etna and sample the regional cuisine, pasta alla Norma

Noto

Noto is a must on your list of places to see in Sicily. This magnificent work of baroque architecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the lovely alleyways while admiring the elaborate facades of the Noto Cathedral and other churches and castles.

To reach the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the centre of Noto, enter the city from the east, passing beneath the Arco di Trionfo. In 1838, Ferdinand de Bourbon inaugurated the statue in the same way. When you look up, you’ll notice three symbolic sculptures: a pelican representing sacrifice, a dog representing loyalty, and a tower representing power.

Ragusa

There are two souls in Ragusa – a contemporary section and its older, Ibla-inspired Baroque  counterpart. The late-baroque cities of the Val di Noto are characterised by a polished elegance, which Ragusa possesses. It draws tourists to its labyrinth of winding lanes where there are numerous churches and palaces to explore.

A beautiful atmosphere is created all around by an ethereal beauty, making it nearly impossible to leave. Explore the quaint town of Ragusa, comprised of Ragusa Ibla and Ragusa Superiore. Finally, enjoy delicious Sicilian sweets while strolling through Ragusa Ibla’s mediaeval alleyways.

Siracusa (Syracuse)

If you seek things to do in Sicily, experience the historical wonders of Siracusa. Some of my favourites are the famous Greek Theatre, the Neapolis Archaeological Park, and the picturesque island of Ortigia.

Syracuse has to be on the agenda of the best places to visit in Sicily whether you’re interested in history, delicious food, or just like walking through a lovely ancient town. You will need at least two days in Syracuse to see everything, but the more time you have here, the more you’ll enjoy it.

The Temples in Agrigento

Seeing the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, a group of ancient Greek temples in the ancient city of Akragas close to Agrigento, is one of the highlights of visiting Sicily. These temples are considered some of the best preserved in the world.

They were created to culturally mirror the Greeks. Even after 2,500 years, the Greeks’ magnificent architecture is still visible.

Stromboli and Vulcano Islands

Discover the distinctive beauty of the Aeolian Islands at Stromboli and Vulcano Islands. In contrast to Vulcano, which has medicinal mud baths and organic thermal springs, Stromboli is renowned for its active volcano.

It is famous for its stunning eruptions, during which its core crater spews molten rock fountains. Many refer to similar eruptive activity at other volcanoes using the term “Strombolian” as these eruptions are so distinct and widely recognised. Simply put, these locations are absolutely the top places to visit in Sicily, Italy.

Mount Etna Volcano

Visit Mount Etna, one of Europe’s most active volcanoes, on a guided trip. Hike to the top, tour the lava tunnels, and take in the stunning views. Since Etna is an active volcano, eruptions are always possible.
